How do I get online?
I am interested in flying on-line using the JGA server but am a complete dingbat when it comes to knowing what I need to install. I have read through all of the information on the website and followed some links but am getting confused about teamspeak and fshost. What are they? When I went to the teamspeak link, I didn't know whether to download the 'client' or 'host' software. I will persevere but would be grateful for any advice on the steps I need to take.
Many thanks.
Andy.

Re: How do I get online?
Hi,
Andy

Getting on line with FS is really pretty easy. The only thing you have to download is the TS client and install that on your system. This will let you talk to the guys online and any problems you have they will help you sort them out. If you click on Training section on the menu bar at the top of the screen you will find some simple and well laid out instructions on how to connect both Teamspeak and flight sim to the servers. I hope you suceed, online flying is great fun and the guys around here are great.

Regards,
Dave

P.S. I hope I haven't confused you more.

Re: How do I get online?
Thx Dave

Hi Andy,

As Dave rightly said, there are a couple of articles in the 'Training' section.

However the instructions on how to join a FSHost session with FSX are different from FS2004, unfortunately I only connect with FS2004 so I'm not able to give instructions for FSX....

But I am sure someone will let me know (hint hint.... )

Andy

Re: How do I get online?
Thanks for the quick response guys. I have downloaded and installed Teamspeak - seemingly successfully. I can, at least, get the robotic 'link engaged' and 'link disengaged' message when I connect and disconnect. Unfortunately, as yet I do not own a microphone, my use of this will be limited.

As far as flying using fshost in FSX is concerned, I had to install FSHostClient from the main FSHost webpage - after promising to send the author a post card. I have used this to link successfully with the JGA server. Due to the changes made to the multiplayer features during the development of FSX, the sound from the flight sim is muted everytime an FSHost window is opened - this is apparently unavoidable. For this reason, I will probably use FS9 for on-line flying.

Thanks again for your advice.
Hope to be in contact soon.
Andrew.

Hi Andy and welcome to JGA

Now you have Teamspeak up and running the best bet is to try and get connected to the JGA Teamspeak server, details you will find on the home page once you have logged on ( otherwise the details are hidden )

Tuesday & Wednesday evenings are particularly popular, Ian or Francis ( two of our ATC guys, and a bit more technical ) will be only too happy to assist with the final touches. Please keep with it, on-line flying brings a new dimension to FS which is difficult to describe but hugely enjoyable - like a world new world opening up!

Re: How do I get online?
Thanks for the encouragement. I have connected to the JGA server on a few occasions but it seems to disconnect me after a few minutes. Reading various forums, it seems that my router is to blame (a number of ports not forwarding etc.) Unfortunately, the information I have found suggests that my particular router may not be up to the job (apparently, it cannot forward enough ports - or something like that). It would be useful if anyone could provide the name of a router that a, copes with the demands of online flying with fshost and b, is easy to set up.

Many thanks
Andy P.

By the way, just in case there are any tech guys reading this and have a solution, I am currently using a Siemans SE587 - Tiscali's bog-standard 'free' equipment.

I didn't think you had to 'open' ports just to play the game only if you were hosting a session, I would check your firewall to start with and make sure FS is an allowed exception.

Re: How do I get online?
My router is a wireless Linksys 2.4 - I've had it for about 6 years since Blueyonder first went live, was about £40 in those days - it runs at least 4 boxes / laptops on-line at any time quite happily all around the house, including an X-Box which can knock out everything before it. It runs 24/7, I can't remember when I last rebooted it. I'm no techi but it and XP are happy together. The router will also take cable to the pcs if your prefer.

I have FS9 port forwarding on 23456 - 23456 "Both", I think FSNav runs on 23432-23432 "Both"

Since Virgin took over Blueyonder things aren't quite so stable but the probs are at their end, not mine
Hope that helps

Mike

Re: How do I get online?
Earlier today, I tried your server again and, hey presto, my system seemed to work without a problem. Admitedly, it was a short hop in a Cessna from Swansea to Cardiff.

I must try it later with some heavy metal on a longer flight.

Re: How do I get online?
Hi Mike

I have being browsing through the net and i have found this site wich shows you how to open your port setings in your linksys have a look.
http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_portfwd.html

Here it shows you what i was telling you by opening the ports for the FS9 and FSNav.

here you have a forum help desk support.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support

Like i told you over teamspeak you should open the folowing ports this is the way i set it up tall my friends in gib and they do not have any problem on login in to the server and with the fsnav.

external ports to 23422 to 23457 on UDP

this should solve all your problems.

happy flying
